Lalai – a boy who loves to act

‘Shar-e-now’ shouts a nine year old boy as loud as if he was a grown up man; while running beside a shared taxi trying to catch passengers by announcing the destination. Some drivers gives him a bit of money – some does not. But for the boy this is only one way out of many to earn money. In the summer he sells water to the many houses in Kabul with no watersupply. Or plastic bags, newspapers or any other things that can help to generate some money for food to his six sisters and brothers, his sick mother and his father who got wounded during the war many years ago and since then can not use his one leg.

At home his name is Fardin and there he is responsible for the families income. In MMCC he is known by the name Lalai, which he got after being a star in an early performance. Among many other things the nine year old boy was the first one to walk on stilts and to act with puppets from behind a black curtain.

Since the summer 2002 Lalai have been a member of MMCCs activities as well as a part of Theatre Takamol. Every morning he shows up in Aschiana no. 2 to join the regular school activities - and to see what is to be done or what to train in MMCC. Though he has to work at the street several hours every afternoon he always have a smile as well as a joke ready in order to make fun. Or to put it in his own words: “It is fun because I love acting.”
